⇒ (of a person) (to understand s.o. or sth., grasp sth.) at once, from the first words spoken, from just a hint:

- X понимает все{{}}с полслова ≈ X picks up on everything (understands everything, gets the point) at a word (right away etc);

|| X понимает Y-a с полслова - X catches person Y's meaning at once (right away etc);

- X understands person Y immediately (right away etc);

|| X и Y понимают друг друга{{}}с полслова ≈ X and Y don't need to spell everything out.

     ♦ Да, её муж стар и не очень красив, у него лысина, брюшко, но с ним легко и просто, он всё понимает с полуслова... (Некрасов 1). Yes, her husband was old and not very good-looking, he was bald, he had a paunch, but life with him was easy and simple; he understood everything at a word... (1a).

     ♦ "...Лучше бы он [старик] совсем не говорил. Путается, хочет всё объяснить... То ли дело эти молодые немочки, всё с полуслова понимают..."(Искандер 5). "...Не [the old man] would have done better not to talk at all. He kept getting tangled up. ...The girls were a different story, they picked up on everything right away..." (5a).

     ♦ Мы понимали друг друга с полуслова, давая об этом знать специальным сигналом, что тоже ускоряло наше общение, сокращая слова (Гинзбург 1). We no longer needed to spell everything out. We had a special sign to show that we had understood, so we could use abbreviations and save time (1a).
